Oil and gas industries, enterprises of the coal chemical industry, metallurgy are faced with the urgent issue of excess sulfur compounds emission abatement. This is necessary to minimize the environmental footprint, improve the conversion rate and contaminants removal efficiency of the incoming feedstock, increase production quality.

The presence of hydrogen sulfide, mercaptans, carbon disulfide, carbonyl sulfide in petroleum products, hydrocarbon gases, process off-gases leads to equipment performance deterioration, corrosion attack. Sulphur compounds are poisonous to catalysts used in commercial plants, thus decreasing the value of hydrocarbon feed and commercial products, energy and resource efficiency of production in general.

The Claus process is one of the key desulfurization processes providing reliable and effective way to recover elemental sulfur, potentially useful product, from hydrogen sulfide by oxidative conversion. Typical schematic flow diagram consists of the following components: reaction furnace, waste heat boiler, from two to four catalytic stages, tail gas treating unit.

While appearing quite simple at a first glance, the process requires considerable knowledge and expertise considering all production factors to solve specific tasks and eliminate the possibility of operational problems.
