Particle Size & Shape Analysis with Optical Analyzer

To identify the key consumer characteristics of catalysts, SKTB Katalizator applies a comprehensive approach involving the determination of elemental and phase composition, texture, activity, selectivity, operational stability, and mechanical characteristics.

Pellet crushing strength, attrition/abrasion resistance are the main mechanical characteristics of the catalysts. Above properties are directly related to the pellet geometry, particle size distribution and shape.

For pellet and powder sizing, SKTB Katalizator utilizes both conventional sieving and laser diffraction method based on PSD measurement using data on laser light intensity dispersed on particles located in measuring unit. The company uses Mastersizer 2000 и Mastersizer 3000 from Malvern Panalytical for the purpose of the latter method.

At the same time, the shape of the catalyst pellet is also of crucial importance. For example, non-spherical particle shape will result in significant attrition wear and, consequently, reduce the service life of the fluidized or moving bed catalysts.

The analytical equipment pool of SKTB Katalizator is steadily expanding. In 2020, it was enlarged with FRITSCH ANALYSETTE 28 ImageSizer size & shape optical analyzer.

Using new instrument, the experts from R&D Department conduct accurate and reproducible shape & size measurements of powders and bulk solids. In addition, the optical dynamic image analysis is a very easy alternative to sieving and particle image analysis via microscope.

Dynamic image analysis is the alternative without weighing, assembling of a sieve stack and time-consuming cleaning. Compared with particle analysis via microscope, you can record due to the fully automatic process with up to 75 images per second a considerable higher number of particles to improve statistical reliability of the obtained results.

The evaluation of measuring results is quite simple: the evaluation software displays each recorded particle clearly as a data point in the immediately available FRITSCH Cloud. The really important information about particle morphology will be shown by the position of the data point in the Cloud. You freely choose which statement is of interest to you: for example, the sphericity in regards to the Minimum Feret Diameter, aspect ratio and many others. The images of each particle can be stored and viewed directly in the evaluation software.

Thus, the research instrumentation pool of SKTB Katalizator allows for a full range of catalysts and carriers performance testing in strict compliance with international standards.
