Mechanical Attrition Strength

Mechanical attrition strength can be measured for solid porous materials (catalysts, sorbents) in the form of tablets, spheres, cylinders, as well as extrudates of other shapes using ASTM D4058 and GOST 16188 methods. At least 1L samples are required for measurement.

Samples are dried at a temperature of 105-110 ° C for 1 hour before measurements. The temperature and time of heat treatment can be changed in agreement with the customer.

The method consists in the abrasion of a trial sample in a drum rotating at a given speed. During the measurement, the sample is subjected to intense friction forces arising both between the particles and in contact with the walls of the drum (partition, steel rod inside the drum). This mode of abrasion simulates the load on the catalyst in commercial conditions: application in a fluidized bed, as well as to determine possible losses during loading or transportation. After the measurement cycle, the mass of particles with a size less than the value established by a certain method is determined.

ASTM D4058

Determination of the mechanical attrition strength of solid materials (catalysts, carriers, sorbents and other porous materials) in the form of tablets, extrudates, spheres and irregular particles with a size from 1.6 to 19 mm in accordance with the ASTM D 4058-96 (2015) method is performed on an Attrition and Abrasion Tester (Vinci Technologies, France) with a nozzle in the form of a cylindrical stainless steel drum with one radial partition inside the entire length of the cylinder.

The strength of the sample is characterized by the ratio of the mass of particles less than 0.85 mm in size formed after abrasion to the initial mass of the sample, expressed as a percentage.

GOST 16188 Method

Determination of the mechanical attrition strength of granular and crushed solid materials (catalysts, catalyst carriers and sorbents) with a diameter of 0.5 to 6.0 mm and a length of up to 10 mm in accordance with the GOST 16188 procedure is performed on a drum-type stand UI2001.00.

The method consists in mechanical attrition of the catalyst sample with a steel rod in a steel drum rotating at a certain speed. The strength of the catalyst is characterized by the ratio of the mass of the sample particles, less than 0.1 mm in size, remaining after abrasion, to the initial mass of the sample, expressed as a percentage.
